March 2022: Day 35 of the war

Ukraine (backed by international support, some of whom had the balls to meet in Kyiv) continues with a strong defense thanks to troop training and morale, unlinking their power grid from Russian dependency, capturing tons of Russian hardware, and inspiring many volunteers to their cause, including some that consider virtue signaling more important than tactics resulting in a number of fatalities. Gotta get those upvotes right?

It's clear what would happen to Kyiv if it should actually be surrounded. It's already happening to Mariupol, a city right on the border, whose citizens are beginning to die of starvation. They're in a tough spot, because each time a ceasefire is called and a corridor is opened for civilians to flee, the Russian's either missile it, mine it, or simply make the corridor only go towards Russia (or their ally, Belarus).

This is now an official stamp.

Russia has declared Arnold Schwarzenegger an enemy for his anti-war video to the Russian people around the time journalist Marina Ovsyannikova managed to get an anti-war sign up on State TV. Nationalization of "unfriendly" companies has also begun, capturing hundreds of civil aircraft and McDonald's (which will now be Uncle Vanya's by turning the M to a B?). Despite their heavy losses, it doesn't look like they have any shortage of troops to recklessly throw into battle - regardless if said troops have working vehicles or supplies to get through the Ukrainian mud.

Said vehicles and/or supplies might be on amphibious ships that were spotted by Japan (apparently not all ships are "amphibious"?). In typical reddit fashion this has been summarized as "[Russia] is bringing military equipment to be abandoned in Ukraine. They should put a "Z" on it so Zelenskyy knows it's another donation for him".

Another of my favorites: "A few months ago Russia said it had 'no plans' to invade Ukraine. I'm starting to think they were telling the truth."

Apparently China officially asked Russia to wait with invasion until after Olympics claims the New York Times, and since the USA could almost accurately predict the date and time of invasion it certainly was a bold decision on Russia's part to plan a surprise attack where their own men were the only ones not in on it.

Russia has also asked China for aid to which I'm not sure what the reply was as China is busy quietly expanding it's reach in the South Pacific (in some cases not so quietly).

Meanwhile Anonymous is siding with the rest of the world by doing a variety of hacks like putting this Russian Camera Dump online where you can... watch Russians do... Russian things? If you are the more visceral visual sort then r/combatfootage might be the place to go (not just for this war). Be warned, that site is not safe for life.

Lastly, since truth is the first casualty of war, it's up to you what to actually believe. For some, this whole thing is just a hoax and it's not happening at all - it's just a big movie set. I guess I need to watch Wag the Dog at some point.

March 2022 Boardgame Ranking

I stumbled upon Pub Meeple's free ranking program and decided to give it a try on my surprisingly large list of board games in my house and have found it is an excellent tool to bypass my scoring system since really, scores change as times go by. (Note: Games that don't "live" with me or that I've thrown away are excluded from the list.)

As such, I ran this twice. Once for what I thought was best, and once for what I actually want to play or replay right now and averaged the two results which are as follows (with lower numbered ranks being better):

(AVG)
Rank    Item

2    Pandemic: Fall of Rome
2    Horrified
3.5    Black Orchestra
6.5    Pandemic: Iberia
8    Eldritch Horror
8    The Crew: Mission Deep Sea
9.5    Atlantis Rising
10.5    Forbidden Desert
10.5    Lords of Waterdeep
11     The Witching Hour (mod for The Witcher: Adventure Game)
11.5    Last Bastion
13    Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
13.5    Dead Men Tell no Tales
15.5    Forbidden Sky
17.5    Cthulhu: Death May Die
17.5    Pandemic
18    Temple of Elemental Evil
18.5    The Grizzled
19    El Grande - Big Box Edition
20    Tomb of Annihilation
20.5    Shadows Over Camelot
21    Five Minute Dungeon
22.5    Castle Ravenloft
23    Xenoshyft
25    Wrath of Ashardalon
25    Escape from Colditz
26    The Mind
26    Operation Flashpoint: Fire Rescue
26    Regicide
29    Dark Souls: The Card Game
29.5    Zombicide: Black Plague
30.5    Police Precinct
31.5    Waterdeep: The Dungeon of the Mad Mage
31.5    Love Letter
32.5    The Legend of Drizzt
33    Sequence
35    Chess
35.5    Firefly Adventures: Brigands and Browncoats
37    House of Danger
39.5    Zombicide Season 2: Prison Outbreak
40    The Witcher: Adventure Game
40.5    London Dread
42    Game of Thrones: Intrigue

This just reinforces my amazement at how a small fan made mod made the lackluster Witcher: Adventure Game gain in standing! Maybe I should hunt down mods for the other games down there, or just make some of my own...

March 2021 Review: Goodbye Muffin

Just a short one this time as I'm a bit down. Muffin, Jim's pet malamute, passed away yesterday. She was a good dog. :(

Gaming wise, I know I told myself I'd be doing less story posts but I simply can't help it when I play a game like Pillars of Eternity which is what's kept me busy for most of this month almost to the exclusion of everything else! The same goes for the crazy board game known as Cthulhu: Death May Die so expect to see some of that coming up soon.

One Year Ago

Like many others I got locked down by COVID. I also started posting about my adventures in Enderal.

Five Years Ago

I started playing Thea and was enjoying foundry quests in Neverwinter Online, most by content creator master Eldarth. Needless to say he long gone since the foundry got shut down, as are his epic creations - much to Neverwinter's detriment.

Longmire
Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion

That's a first, having a blog status post take the top spot. I guess the mix of Sharandar news and a Wordsworth poem is a winner! The other two are understandable as both Longmire and Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion are quite popular pieces of media.

March 2020 Review: Lockdown the World

With the coronavirus exploding around the globe it's a strange world at the moment with many working from home and normally busy public areas being deserted. Doesn't bode well for my current industry but all we can do is just wait and see what happens next. This "social distancing" order has also put our board game sessions on hold, which just leaves more time for the many free games available online - though most of those really old ones from the sudden surge at GOG (because I wasn't paying attention) are a bit too dated for my tastes.

As for the bloggers among you Blaugust has come early in the form of Blapril! Go check it out as it might be something that interests you! :)

One Year Ago

I began the Dying Light Diary and also said goodbye to the Foundry of Neverwinter Online. Ironic given that five years ago...

Five Years Ago

I was happy one of my Foundry quests got second place! It didn't stop me from hating Neverwinter Online's black ice design though, which has since rightfully been removed. I also made a Photo Story folder which is now defunct thanks to Photobucket, and watched a number of movies - the highlight of which is The Interview.

March 2019 Status

Looks like Neverwinter Online is getting a major overhaul in the next Mod, which has inspired me to return in preparation. At this stage it couldn't possibly be worse than Acquisitions Inc. right?

That said it's pretty clear I need a "holiday" from my PC to get rid of some of the higher list items, all of which are still there from last time. That's more likely to happen when I hit the more massive games (file size wise) while waiting for them to download.

End 2019 with less weight (no change from last month, total: no change)
Make board game prototype (no progress)
Complete web comic chapter 1 (no progress)
    Clean out wardrobe (no progress)
Deal with overhanging trees (no progress)
    Clean the roof (no progress)

March 2018 Status

Status update time and once again I'm doing that thing where I'm adding things to my to do list, even though the previous items are still there!

Complete web comic chapter 1 (procrastinating)
Finish board game prototype I'm happy with (planning "Game 19")
End the year with less weight (+0.5 kg from last month, running total: -0.5 kg)
    +Finish the Direbug Saga
+Clear 20 games from my back log
    +Draw 12 drawings of anything
    +Learn 5 more songs
+Complete NWO: Lost City of Omu (x2)

Ah, procrastination my old friend. In my head, I'm treating the 12 drawings task as a warmup before I get into the web comic thing but I secretly know I'm just putting it off. Knowing me, I'll probably complete the 20 games task (which is around half my current backlog list) before the web comic one. Definitely going to gun for NWO's latest module too.

Weight wise I'm trying a routine change of waking up 20 minutes earlier to exercise. We'll see if that does anything, other than make me sore. It's also hard to out train all the cookies and ice cream. :P

Song wise I've got a leg up on that already, since I have a short list of targets. For those that need it I'm going to try make my own version easier. Not that many readers will ever hear me play/sing these but in case you are curious, these are said potentials:

Karma Chameleon by Culture Club
Dust in the Wind by Kansas
Take on Me by A-ha
Carry on my Wayward Son by Kansas (soft version)
Darkest from Thunderbolt Fantasy
Rapture from Juuni Taisen (piano only)
Raimei from Thunderbolt Fantasy (unlikely)

Today I Smiled: Second Lie of bs-ter

Looks like I've been Liebstered a second time, this time by WolfDragon who generally suggested having a search field somewhere on here... so I've plugged on in on the left, just underneath the Library section! Just like last time, I'm going to kill the chain here after answering WolfDragon's questions. I think I'll have a go at the 11 random facts too, though as I mentioned last time - there are already around 31 facts I put up in last years Blaugust (starting from this post and ending here).

Eleven Facts that you may already know about me:
  • I draw and have made cartoons in flash. Kinda bummed with the recent news for that product.
  • The pic in my profile is what I actually looked like before.
  • I compose music and mainly play piano.
  • I love boardgames and want to make my own. So far, this has been unsuccessful.
  • Always wanted to make a computer game that was good enough to sell (for the price of a hot chocolate). Will be trying that in the future.
  • I wear glasses when on the computer as I am far sighted.
  • When I was younger, a german shepherd managed to pounce and pin me to the floor - it then licked my face!
  • I sometimes take cold showers just for the hell of it. This is most interesting during winter.
  • I'm a chocaholic!
  • I watch a lot of movies. (Duh)
  • Since March, I've been on a not so strict "avoid carbs" diet. Lost 7 kgs so far.

WolfDragon's Pop Quiz:

If you could have any vehicle of any type from a game, which one would it be?
Giant Robot. One of the humanoid looking ones from either ZMR or Mech Warrior.

Does your current nickname (or character name) have a meaning? If so, what is it?
Yes - a very silly one! My Skyrim actually came from when I was learning to play basketball, during an age where I was so young that I could barely shoot from the freethrow line - it was far! I thought it would be so much easier if I could walk on the sky, upside down no less, because it would be easier, as the only upside down player, to shoot, not need to dribble (because I'm flying right? no traveling violation there) and be able to dunk (jumping is inverted) and touch the ring as my taller and at the time, way fitter brothers could. While the elder scrolls totally "stole" my name, at least theirs had a more awesome connotation to it. :P

Do you like to collect things in game? If so, what is your strangest collection?
Healing potions. Not really a very "out there" collection, but in games that have healing potions I normally use them pretty fast. It isn't uncommon for me to bring 500+ of the strongest type I can get my hands on.

Have you ever been drawn back into an MMO because of an email they sent you?
Nope. If said emails had instant rewards attached to them then they'd have a better chance. Hasn't happened yet though.

What game achievement are you most proud of? (It can be a “real” achievement or a goal that you made up for yourself.)
Playing piano and singing at my cousin's wedding - as the only musician. First time I ever did something like that, and it was awesome. :)

Have you ever lead a group of people in a game (such as a guild)? If not, do you think you could?
Yes, and still do as part of the triumvirate leadership for my guild. It's a lot easier with co-leaders I think.

How do you express your love for games? Writing? Art? Posting on the forums?
All the above PLUS also making content for games that allow me to, such as Neverwinter Online (Foundry) or when I was a GM in various Ultima Online shards.

Has gaming helped your life in any way? If so, how?
It certainly sped up my typing and reading.

Describe a moment where you very badly wanted to do something that went beyond the limits/physics of a game. Such as save a favorite character that was otherwise destined to die.
Any time you are -required- to have more than one person to do anything: from fight a boss to open a door, that is stupidity. True heroes get stuff done on their own!

Ever wanted a pet from a game? Which one?
In real? Well, there are many cool ones in my Mabinogi stable, but if they poop then I don't want any! Hrm, maybe the flamesteeds would be ok - they do seem mechanical anyway. Mechanical and ... on fire. :P

And most importantly: cake or pie?
Cake! Especially the chocolate variety. Pie is often filled with fruits. Bleh!

End of the March Report

Part of the "Odd Jobs of Neverwinter" journal!

Another week of Foundry Quests was completed. This time our agents tried:

The Deserters Tower @ Horvay [NW-DQ89RVF9W]
A simple slaying of deserters from the Neverwinter Army.

Wizards First Rule: Chapter 2 @ reichlyn [NW-DR8MXWH45]
Stays quite close to the original story, with enough changes to make it interesting. This section is focused on Chase.

Towers of the Night @ rabbitfear [NW-DHUAT52RB]
Part of a Campaign involving Cyric, the god of murder, trying to escape his godly prison.

Entertainment for our Guests @ P3rsian [NW-DL419VVPU]
Simple arena combat, with a selection of varying difficulties.

Troubled Spirits @ kaykachyna [NW-DEJL85AE5]
A quest involving strange animal spirits and witches.

The Heroes Tomb @ redfireee [NW-DSDJQCUC]
Heavily story based mission involving a child gaining some really strong powers.

Temple of Elements: Water @ Tumbuk7 [NW-DP20WEP96]
A fantastic and well designed puzzle challenge.

Rescue in the Silver Marches @doctorbadger [NW-DTSKK80J9]
While the premise is rather simple, this quest oozes with love and care to detail and is highly recommended by our agents.

Back to the Past @ OoKennethoO [NW-DIP7QSSUT]
An interesting time travel tale, part 2 of the campaign which began on the previous page.

Uncovered in Swampland @ Waynemando [NW-DQWLC2CT8]
A straight forward dungeon bash.

Barbara's Mansion @ svena2 [NW-DLMJGTCOF]
A beautiful mansion with nice surroundings that make for a great RP zone.

Marrovyre's Mansion @ Happilujah [NW-DIMNVNT99]
Less of a mansion and more of a hut in a forest. One not really worth visiting. RP only.

Guardians of Helm Guild Hall @ Candle71 [NW-DA7GMOY3W]
An unnecessarily large RP zone centered around Helm's Hold.
