Animated violence!
Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix
From the makers of the Castlevania TV Series and more importantly the Guardians of Justice, is this completely whacked out animated series wherein Ubisoft basically handed over all their IPs to be blended into a story about heartbreak, revolution and revenge. Much like the Guardians of Justice the format changes from animated to sprites to blurred actors? The mixed mediums work just as they did previously which is, not great. Then you have characters completely changed for the story. When the last Assassin is a talking frog (and he happens to be the best character) you can just feel something went very wrong. Somehow there's going to be a season two of this, and I can only hope they put more effort into making it better narrative wise instead of just more woke than it already is. Thumbs up on killing characters though. That's always a plus!
Akame ga Kill!
This is an older dark fantasy anime that I've only recently finished watching and it focuses on a band of assassins who are the spearhead for a revolution against an oppressive empire. The art isn't really super high quality which is why it slipped my attention previously, and while the action is just on the ok level, it has a really good story that uses the harem-style in a pretty unique way. There are only 24 episodes to it, and in each one someone dies. Sure it starts out as low level goons but as it goes on members from both sides of the war start biting the bullet. High praise for perfectly illustrating characters on the "bad" side too, who aren't all monsters and having decent music to boot. If you're looking for a fighty anime and don't mind losing a good chunk of the cast, then this one is for you. Highly recommended.

Battlefield 4 Hong Kong
Looks like my list yesterday that included Blizzard was far too short. Here's a more complete record (just scroll down a bit) that also has the "other side" which includes the likes of South Park and Ubisoft (at the moment anyway).
What I really wanted to post was this cool Battlefield 4 Hong Kong compilation video though which is a nice summary of what's going on there. Such realistic graphics and huge player capacity! Downsides are it looks like there's a lot of running due to the huge maps, an overload of spectators and the respawn times take forever.
Switching back to regular content tomorrow, unless something else explodes overnight.

Today I Smiled: High Voices
I'm taking a short blogging break for a few days so I thought I'd leave you with something to listen to, courtesy of DL who is currently sucked into Filipino singers.
Marcelino Pomoy and Morisette are pretty good, but I was most impressed by Gary Valenciano who sings Chick Corea's jazz standard: Spain. It is amazing! Here's a low res version but with less ads in the middle.
I also can't help but share a few more Brexit funnies. At some point I feel the Queen's just going to line up those politicians and...
slakmehl (on getting further Brexit extension)
Because when you're sitting in a car with a perfectly good steering wheel careening towards a cliff, your only option is to figure out how to make the edge of the cliff slightly further away.
punchdrunkskunk
Turns out Brexit negotiations are basically the Spice Girls:
UK: I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
EU: So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
UK: I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
EU: So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
UK: I wanna Huh I wanna Huh I wanna Huh I wanna Huh
EU: ...
UK: I really, really, really wanna [unintelligible].
EU: ...
Lastly, due to the fire at Notre Dame recently, Ubisoft are offering Assassin's Creed: Unity for free this week. As expected with this outcome, folks on reddit are now suggesting "We need to burn more historical monuments." LOL.

Watch Dogs
Where you play as a gun-toting wizard with a magical mobile phone.
Ubisoft has a thing for open world games, and in this one you get to explore modern day Chicago as a very flawed, hypocritical and ultimately boringmurdere vigilante with a magical cell phone. This is to make up for his lack of parkour ability when compared to the other well known Ubisoft open world series: Assassin's Creed. The many nods to that game here are pretty funny.
The city is huge, and as expected there are a good number of mini-games to do and skills to unlock while exploring it. Fortunately getting around via train, car or boat is pretty easy once you get the hang of it - complete with a decent enough selection of radio music to listen to while traveling. Another thing to get a hang of is the magical phone which simply gives too much information on the many NPCs. You can turn off the profiler, but most/all the good things only happen when its up.
While it is certainly an entertaining game (and possibly addictive if you like Grand Theft Auto type chaos) there are a number of things that I found annoying. First it's a soft game audio wise, I needed to turn up the volume a bit to hear anything. Also, the protagonist and most of the other characters (specifically those related to him) are morons. I guess it runs in the family? Some tasks fail because you killed the main target, despite killing all his henchmen, some civilians and possibly some police officers in the process, while others it's ok to just go on a killing spree?
Also half the missions are working as the exact type of person the protagonist is supposed to hate (killers), but if you want total completion then... oh well? There's also one part where you run the same map three or so times (because plot device), when really if you just did the "third" time first it would have saved everyone a lot of trouble. At least the difficulty (on Realistic anyway) is good, but there's just something lacking. A likable protagonist maybe? I didn't really give a crap about him or his feelings throughout the entire game.
The game is alright for one ride but pretty much becomes "meh" soon after the first act. I give it two and a half stolen cars out of five. If you want an open world title where you actually care for the protagonist, try Assassin's Creed: Black Flag instead. Edward Kenway is awesome.
