Eventually I get shipped off to Camp Icarus (aka newbie landing) and meet a few of the locals.
Apparently there are fairies here.
and ... lower gravity...
And um... those type of ladies.
And dinosaurs.
And dinosaurs!
and dinosaurs!!!
I also find it pretty cool that unlike most MMOs I've played, all your "hot" keys aren't special moves, they are all social functions such add friend, whisper, follow, trade, view friend list, etc!
I tried this thing in beta, when it was barely playable. That seems like a million years ago - it must have been at least a decade. It used to turn up every so often in mainstream media news stories about islands and spaceships being sold for millions of dollars, which, if true, suggested a function other than gaming was keeping it alive.
ReplyDeleteIs there actually a game there? And is anyone playing it?
Well, there are quests and skills raise through use ala Ultima Online but the vibe I get is very different. It's like half the player base is just trying to make PED, which is pretty tough in game. Harder still the ones trying to reach 1000 PED so that they can start cashing out 100 USD.
DeleteI played this years ago for a short time, there was no tutorial and making money was almost impossible without spending something at the start. I see it's at least better now.
ReplyDeleteI know finding anything in there used to be pretty much gambling since you could maybe break even while mining or fighting, but often time you could end up loosing money, Is it still like that?
There's a tutorial now but it still seems very possible to run out of supplies as that whole "gambling" thing you described is still there.
