Question: Do you replay games?

Simple one I'll leave up for a few days... in this age of MMOs and game backlogs, how often do you go back to replay a "finished" game? Replaying due to DLCs or "new/updated content" does not count. I'm talking along the lines of winning say Doom 2 or the original Warcraft. Will you ever play through the whole thing again?

  1. Clearly a no from me here. There's too many new games around and only so much time i have on my hands. It's a complete inversion of my youth, when time was plenty but new games or rather the money for games was short.

So i'd mostly be curious how things these days look like for younger people, but with enough F2P games going around, i would guess that even they don't do much replaying any more.

    1. Thanks for the reply Sylow. I'm still trying to decide for myself if I should replay some of my stash but that time problem is a bit of an issue. :)

  2. Yes, but it typically is a while afterward. Or, in the case of the game I recently picked back up again --Baldur's Gate-- about 18-19 years later.

I'm not a big "let's replay from a different angle" person, unless I'm playing a game such as Civ or Stellaris where that's the point of the game, but I will eventually go back and check things out again some years afterward.

MMOs are a bit of a different animal, as alts are a big pastime in MMOs. Bioware essentially created 8 different stories in SWTOR as a point of emphasis, so I'm fine with playing those stories. In fact, SWTOR is likely the sole exception to my "I'm not coming back for a while" dictum above, because I have several Smugglers and Inquisitors out there. I think that was one of the problems I had with WoW post-Cataclysm, since a single region story dominated to the point that there wasn't any local variation among different classes' playing through. Ergo, you've seen it once, you've seen it all. The lack of choice in the selections when talking to an NPC also has an impact, IMHO. I'd imagine that LOTRO and other MMOs, such as Age of Conan, suffer from the same problem, but I haven't completed the quests for those games up to completion yet.

To be honest, I think my problem is a lack of completing games rather than completing the same game multiple times. A lot of games go for the gut wrenching event (mass murder or the PC being framed as two prime examples) to advance the plot, and the attempts for games to be "dark" and "realistic" eventually push me into stopping the game. Kind of like how I don't plan on reading George R.R. Martin's stories, as I know he'll kill off characters I like --tons of them-- so why watch the train wreck? For gravitas? So I can rubberneck? Nah, if I want to see realism like GRRM and others are selling, I'll go watch the news. There's tons of that going on in real life.

    1. Hehe, went a bit off tangent there Redbeard but yeah - having a huge gap between plays does help swing the pendulum towards the "I think I should replay this" marker.

I too am not a big fan of the "different angle" stuff, but I am a sucker for all manner of gut wrenching stuffs. :P

    2. Yeah, I figured I ought to explain "why" I don't typically replay games, particularly games in the post 9/11 world.

  3. Dragon Age:Inquisition is the only one I've played multiple times. It's just actiony and RPG enough - plus options for multiple groups makeup - that it got me 3x now lol. I will probably play Mass effect: andromeda a 2nd time to completion for the same reasons. Mostly I tend to be a total tourist on initial RPG plays, so I look forward to a 2nd play through to enjoy the highlites of the game.

    1. Wow, sounds like I should get Dragon Age: Inquisition sometime if it's good enough for 3x+ play throughs! Mass Effect: Andromeda too. Thanks for your reply. :)
